Learning Outcome #2

Learning Outcome #2

My essays lacked structure before I took this English class, especially the body paragraphs. I had little to no direction on how to organize the content of my paragraphs. In this English course, I learned the Barclay’s Formula framework and in addition how to incorporate my own views with respect to the quotes. Regarding Barclay’s Formula, it is one of the most helpful things I took away this semester and one that I will continue to utilize. Above is an example of the first body paragraph from my final draft, which includes multiple phrases that have been highlighted. The topic sentence and claim are in purple, and the transition sentences preceding the quote are in light blue, corresponding to the Barclay Formula. The quotes are in the portions with the green highlight, and the analysis is in the section after them, marked in yellow. I recognize how I apply the information we learned in class and implement it to constructing my piece into this final draft. I utilize this to create my structure, and then I implement the examples from “They say, I say” that we discussed in class to build my analysis following a quote. I’ve noticed that I can follow the Barclay Formula or the “They say, I say” when creating projects without even looking at the handout. I am aware of the format I should follow and how to use the templates for introducing the quote, summarizing it, and providing my own perspective. Since enrolling in the class, I think my paragraph structure and formatting have improved. My ability to include sources into my paragraphs and use them to support my point of view has greatly increased. The quotes I employ in my paragraphs are significant and complement each other nicely, as does my interpretation of them. I add my point of view in the analysis and demonstrate how both quotes represent what I need them to at the conclusion of each paragraph. I think the sources I have been provided in this lecture have significantly improved the way I integrate these quotes with my own views and style my writing.
