Learning Outcome #1

Learning Outcome #1

Walking into this English class in January, I had no notion on how to improve my work overtime. In high school, I would frequently complete an essay in one night and submit it without even proofreading. Not only did I finally learn how to successfully complete local revisions, but also global modifications on my projects. When we begin drafting a new project in my English class, we typically begin with 500 words. My initial draft and final draft for this project are both posted above. You can tell from the first paragraph of my first draft how poorly organized and lacking in content it was. In this draft I didn’t even mention the second source I utilized throughout the essay. Global revision is intended to convey content, structure, and clarity for this learning outcome. There is a significant difference between reading my initial draft and my final draft. In addition to excluding the second source from the introduction, I also lacked any personal viewpoint. In my final document, I introduce both sources, the topics they cover, and my perspective on the primary conflict. I can identify my starting point and then proceed to advance to my final draft by revising my essay from 500 words. Around 1000 words into the drafts is usually when I start to have all my ideas down on paper and am prepared for peer review. Peer review has played a significant role in all my revisions, especially for this project. Following peer review in class, I usually make a list of a few things I want to pay particular attention to. The majority of these are personalization, context, and clarity. By doing this, I can clarify and add context as necessary throughout the article in accordance with my analysis. Additionally, I’ll add to my introduction to explain what I’ll be talking about. When I revise an essay, I seek to personalize it to reflect my beliefs while also attempting to see all sides of an argument. Many of my personal conclusions are made throughout my analysis or when I’m concluding a paragraph to provide my own take on the information that I just presented to the reader. My local modifications typically begin following my peer-review session and when I am putting the finishing touches on my essay. I’ll keep editing and proofreading my essays to ensure that the grammar and spelling are flawless before I turn them in. Since the beginning of the semester, a significant change has occurred in how I adjust my papers. I find that using peer review to identify my essay’s specific areas of need is quite beneficial. When I must compose an essay again in the future, I believe my revision process will continue with the use of global and local modifications. From my first draft introduction to my final draft introduction, I think it is evident to see how I have improved in both global and local revision over the course of the editing procedure.
